ocean kayak scrambler
 

Does anyone have a scrambler by ocean kayak? I have heard they are good for fishing, and was hoping to get some insight on one.

I started out on one my brother still has 2.They are stable enough and paddle ok.The only downside is you cant store much in the small hatches.I like to store my rods inside for surf launcheds and landings.If you fish the bays or lakes or the ocean with one or 2 rods you will be ok. Jack

I have fished from one a dozen or so times and they are a well built kayak. The one main drawback to them in my opinion are the hatch sizes. You can get a dry bag below deck no problem, but you may be restricted when you go to put something below deck which has any length to it.

Like Jack said though, if you don't think you'll need much below deck storage, one may do the trick. You could put a small cooler in back of the seat and a few dry bags in front with your gear in them. If you plan to carry alot of gear, you may run out of room before you know it. Hope this helps,

I have fished from a Scrambler before. It is an old design. I thought it was adequate at best. Like Perry and Jack said, minimal below deck storage. It also doesn't have much weight capacity. I don't know what size you are, but I weigh
250 lbs and I like to carry the "kitchen sink" with me when I go out. (bait tank, assorted tackle, fishfinder with battery, 3ea 7ft rods, some snacks and water,
gaff, net, billy club, etc. etc. etc.) My point is that there are better fishing
kayaks out there than the Scrambler. You need to try a few of them out on the water. Take a rod and some tackle with you and try fishing from each one to see which one is the most comfortable for you.

Good choice! That was my first kayak. 450 lbs capacity and plenty of below deck storage! I could store a arm load of 8ft rods down that massive front hatch. It surfed pretty well too.

I tried a cobra navigator today, and kind of like the stability i am torn between the choice of pro explorer or navigator. I still want to try a number of other kayaks though, i want to make sure that i get the perfect one.

Good for you! That's the way to do it. What works for one guy might not work as well for you. It's Fords vs Chevys.

Check out Hobie also the peddle drive is the way to go! Hands free for fishing. Expensive but worth it.

i finally decided to go with a hobie outback suv kayak:worthy . I went to taylor tackle today and ordered one. It should be here on tuesday, ill try to post pics. Also, could someone tell me which fishifinder to go with? zI was thinking about a humminbird or lowrance. One more thing, which bait tank should i go with? should i make my own or buy one?thanks for all the replies on which yak to get. Tight lines everybody:thumbup

Congrats on the kayak. I currently use one of the Eagle FishEasy 2 fishfinders, and really like it. It's not a top of the line model, but it has lasted for a few seasons and still works well. I'm just using it to see what the bottom ie structure there may be and bait schools, so I don't need one of the real fancy color ones.

For bait tanks, if I were going to buy one it would be one of the bait tanks made by liquid fishing. On the other hand, if I was going to make one out of a cooler or 5 gallon bucket which is easy to do, then I would go that route and add additional rod holders etc as needed and have a home-brewed job.
I guess the question is do you want to build one yourself, or just spend the cash and buy one ready to go? If you want to make one, there's plenty of examples in our rigging section here on the website. TC&TL,
