Cherry Beach - 4/27/07

Launched out of cherry beach on Friday Morning

Weather and seas were great. Unfortunately no tubers or kayakers in the water. Saw 1 guy surf fishing from the beach. Stayed in close for about an hour and came up on a huge line of nasty foam with trash in it running perpendicular to the beach. Peddled around it and made my way to Island White.

Wind and chop picked up @ 1:00 and decided to move back in closer to shore. Bite was slow, decided to check out the galaxy apartments (?) that had a fire a few weeks back.

Thanks for the report :thumbup Yep, thats a croaker. Some eat them, but they can have alot of chemicals in them especially from Long Beach area. Did you get or try to get any bass around the island? The Islands can be pretty good for bass using plastics. I heard something about red tide a few days back. Did you see any in LB?. Cherry Beach can get pretty stanky when the red tide hits the area. Right past the pier /dock for Island white the water went from blue/green to brown. I don't know if that was red tide or if the boat taxi kicked up the bottom. Either way I stayed away.

During the red tides, don't be shy about fishing the oil islands.

I fished in a tournament last year and we stayed inside LB harbor, during a really bad red tide. Most of the 30 or so other boats went outside the breakwall thinking the red tide inside the harbor would kill the bite. We won the tourney with a 22lb limit for 5 bass.

When it's red tide like that, try throwing a firetiger or chartreuse crankbait right on & around the rocks (and hold on)!

That fish is a small spotfin croaker! Trust me, I know my spotfin croakers. See the black spot on the fin? Piranha-Croaker hunter! :worthy
